Eid al-Adha is celebrated on 1st September this year.
New Horizon would like to wish Eid Mubarak to everybody!
It’s now two years since 3-year-old Alan Kurdi was found drowned on a Turkish beach. Since then it is estimated that 8500 people have died on the same journey.
Khaled Hosseini, a UNHCR goodwill ambassador , has written Sea Prayer. This imagined letter is written in the form of a monologue, delivered by a Syrian father to the son lying asleep in his lap, on the eve of their sea crossing to Europe.
Hosseini is the author of The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns and And the Mountains Echoed.
Many asylum seekers suffer from mental health issues as a result of their experiences in the home country, while travelling or living in the asylum-seeking process for a long time.
Regari Recovery College have kindly offered asylum seekers five free places on their “Understanding Mental Health” program starting in September.
Regari is a mental health, recovery and wellbeing education centre that run modules that are co-produced and co-delivered by people with lived experience of mental health challenges, family members and/or carers and people working in the area of mental health and related topics.
An open evening will be on 4 September at 19:30–21:00 in the Earl of Rosse Lecture Theatre Athlone Institute of Technology

We are holding a planning session on Tuesday 29th August at 6.00pm in the Education Room to co-ordinate the arrangement of different levels of English classes and to sort out timetables of the other regular sessions we organise. Your input into this is very important.
Amnesty International are offering a massive open online course (MOOC) on human rights. It will help you gain the knowledge to defend and promote the rights of refugees across the world.
Places are unlimited on our free online course Human Rights: The Rights of Refugees which will be available for 12 months from 16 November 2016 to 19 November 2017.
Who can take the course?
Everyone with online access can take this course, whether you are in school or college, at university, taking the course as a group, or following it on your own in your free time.
The course will be delivered in English, French and Spanish.
