Gramophone Society Invitation

Athlone Gramophone society have very kindly invited us to their regular meetings. See below for details:

Glad to have discovered your site.

Music is truly international, which is why members decided to invite Asylum Seekers in Athlone to our meetings.
We meet every second Thursday in the Prince of Wales Hotel at 8.15 pm.
The next meeting is on Thursday 5th October. This will be a bring-your-own night when members and visitors are asked to bring along a CD with a favourite piece of music to be played on the night (max duration about 5 minutes).

Anyone who enjoyes listening to music in comfortable surroundings is very welcome…..no charge!
Please ask for Nora, Mel, Ivan, Mary or Norman.

Anyone got interesting music they would like to play? I’ve got Arabic and South African music, nothing much from Afghanistan or Pakistan.

It gives us great pleasure to invite you to the DCU Asylum Narratives colloquium, which takes place on Friday 29th September. Highlights include:

  • The inaugural Sanctuary Lecture “Broken World, Broken Word: Resilience in the Arts of Languaging Border Distress”, delivered by Prof Alison Phipps, OBE, UNESCO Chair of Refugee Integration through Languages and the Arts, Glasgow University.
  • The critically acclaimed play, “Éire, Land of a Hundred Thousand Welcomes”by Mount Temple Comprehensive students

It should be quite an interesting day. The speakers are very good and our very own Chris McDermott is on the panel.

Asylum Interviews starting again

After a long break caused by the introduction of the 2015 Protection Act and the summer break it looks like asylum interviews are starting up again.

If you have recently received a call to interview you might like to review these sections of the New Horizon website.

It’s got information on:

  • Asylum Seeking Process
  • Definition of a Refugee
  • Refugee Status and Subsidiary Protection
  • Asylum Application Process
  • Dublin III Convention
  • Restrictions on Asylum Seekers
  • The Asylum Interview
  • Preparing for the Asylum Interview
  • At the Asylum Interview
  • Interview Result

If you have problems understanding these documents ask any New Horizon volunteer to explain it.
